West Coast Highlights: Holetown, St. James & Speightstown
The West Coast, often called the Platinum Coast, is famous for calm turquoise water, elegant restaurants and spectacular sunsets. Here is how to make the most of it.
Holetown
Holetown is where the first English settlers landed in 1627, and today it is the social heart of the West Coast.
- Limegrove Lifestyle Centre: Designer shopping, cafes and a cinema
- First and Second Street: A cluster of restaurants and bars that come alive in the evening
- Holetown Festival: Held each February with music, food and crafts
- Folkestone Marine Park: Calm water and a snorkel trail just north of town
St. James Beach Access
Most West Coast beaches are public, and you can reach them through small marked paths between properties. Look out for:
- Paynes Bay: Swim with sea turtles close to shore
- Sandy Lane Bay: Reached by a public path beside the famous hotel
- Gibbes Beach: A quieter, shaded spot just north of Holetown
Speightstown
Barbados' second town has a relaxed, historic feel, with colourful old buildings, a waterfront boardwalk and local snackettes. Mullins Beach, just to the south, is a lovely place for lunch with your toes in the sand.
Where to Watch the Sunset
- Mullins Beach for a casual drink as the sun goes down
- Paynes Bay for a quiet walk along the water
- Speightstown boardwalk for local atmosphere and open sea views
Keep an eye out for the famous "green flash" just as the sun dips below the horizon on a clear evening.
Dining Highlights
The West Coast is home to some of the finest restaurants in the Caribbean, from oceanfront fine dining to relaxed beach bars serving flying fish cutters. Many of the best spots fill up quickly, so book a table in advance during the winter season, and check opening days before you go.
Getting Around
The coast road can be busy and parking in Holetown is limited in the evening. A pre-booked driver can drop you at the door of your restaurant and collect you when you are ready.
